Bale Unroller Buyer’s Guide

October 8, 2026

Choose the Right Machine for Your Farm

Blaney Agri Forager X10

Faster feeding. Better bale control. Less waste. Discover why farmers worldwide trust Blaney bale unrollers.

A bale unroller should do more than turn a bale. It should save you time, cut out hard manual work and put the feed exactly where you want it – without the bale falling apart or half of it ending up under the cattle.

That is why choosing the right machine matters. Wet, heavy and misshapen bales put very different demands on an unroller than firm, well-shaped bales. Buy too light a machine and you may soon find its limits. Buy more machine than you need and you are paying for capability you may never use.

At Blaney Agri, we build two proven solutions. The Forager X10 is our premium machine for difficult bales, demanding workloads and maximum feed control. The Bale Feeder X6 is our compact, dependable and outstanding-value choice for firm, well-shaped bales.

Both are built around the same simple idea: one person, one tractor and one machine to lift, load, carry and feed.

Blaney does not build lightweight, one-size-fits-all bale unrollers. We build purpose-designed machines around the bales farmers actually have to feed from firm, well-shaped bales to the wet, saggy and misshapen bales that expose the limits of lesser machines.

“A good bale is easy to feed. The real test of a bale unroller is what happens when the bale is wet, soft and starting to lose its shape. That is where the strength, power and bale-retention system of the machine really matter.”

Sean Blaney, Founder Blaney Agri

What is a bale unroller

A bale unroller is a tractor, loader or telehandler-mounted machine designed to lift, carry and distribute round bales of silage, haylage, hay or straw. Rather than leaving a whole bale in one place or manually pulling forage apart, the machine rotates the bale and lays the material in a controlled swath.

Depending on the model and configuration, forage can be distributed in fields, yards and passageways, into troughs, over barriers, on either side of the tractor or into a diet feeder or mixer wagon.

Why use a bale unroller

Feeding bales is a job that has to be done every day, often before or after everything else. The right bale unroller takes the fork work out of feeding, helps keep forage in front of the stock instead of under their feet and allows one person to complete the job with one tractor.

Spend less time feeding

Manual feeding is physically demanding and consumes valuable time every day throughout the feeding season. A self-loading bale unroller reduces manual forking and allows one person to complete the job quickly with one tractor and one machine.

Put the feed where the stock can reach it

Dropping or opening a full bale can create an uncontrolled pile. Forage may then be trampled, contaminated or left uneaten. A bale unroller creates a more controlled and consistent swath, helping you place forage where livestock can reach it.

Feed what is needed and keep the rest fresh

Hydraulic control allows the operator to start, stop and adjust the feedout. You can distribute the amount required and retain the remainder for the next feed, helping keep the forage fresh and palatable.

Get more value from every bale

Every bale has already absorbed the cost of land, grass, machinery, labour, fuel, wrap, transport and storage. More controlled placement can reduce avoidable trampling and contamination, making better use of forage you have already paid to produce.

Feed in the field or in the yard

A bale unroller is not limited to housed winter feeding. It can supplement livestock directly in the field when grass growth slows or grazing comes under pressure, then move indoors with the livestock for the main winter season.

Blaney Agri Forager X10 Outdoor Feeding

Lift, load and feed with one tractor

A self-loading system removes the need to use one machine to load the bale and another to distribute it. For many farms, this means fewer attachments, less swapping and a much simpler daily routine: lift, load and feed.

“We start by asking what the bales are actually like, because that determines the machine. There is no point selling a farmer more than is needed but there is no point buying too light and finding the machine’s limits when the bales turn wet.”

Sean Blaney, Founder Blaney Agri

Five questions to ask before buying a bale unroller

1. What condition are your bales normally in

Bale condition is one of the most important considerations. Wet, heavy, saggy or misshapen bales become increasingly difficult to control as they are unrolled. As the bale gets smaller it can become softer and less stable, increasing the risk of material falling out in a sudden pile.

If you regularly handle challenging bales, choose a machine engineered to retain them throughout the complete feedout. The Forager X10 is the Blaney choice for difficult bales because of its high enclosure, innovative triple-peak spikes, heavy-duty construction and optional side rollers.

If your bales are normally firm, regular and well shaped, the Bale Feeder X6 provides a strong, straightforward and cost-effective solution.

Blaney match: X10 for difficult bales. X6 for favourable bale conditions.

2. How much bale retention and control do you need

Some machines can begin a bale effectively but struggle as it becomes smaller, softer and less stable. If the machine cannot retain the changing bale, forage can fall out suddenly rather than being distributed consistently.

The Forager X10 is built to hold the bale from start to finish. Its high enclosure, triple-peak spikes and optional side rollers work together to keep difficult bales contained. That gives the operator greater control over how much forage is released and where it is placed.

For firm, regular bales in favourable conditions, the X6 provides controlled everyday feedout through a compact, proven design.

3. Where do you need to feed

Both machines suit feeding in fields, yards and passageways, but the right configuration depends on the layout of the farm. Consider whether you need to feed on either side, lift down stacked bales, reach into raised troughs, distribute forage over a barrier or unroll directly into a diet feeder or mixer wagon.

The standard X10 is the all-round tractor-mounted option. The X10L is designed for loaders and telehandlers and adds the versatility to handle stacked bales, troughs and mixer wagons. The X10W uses a hydraulically adjustable offset wing to place forage further away or over an obstacle.

X10 for tractor work, X10L for loader versatility and X10W when you need extra reach.

4. What tractor loader or telehandler will carry it

The machine must be matched correctly to the vehicle. Check tractor horsepower, linkage category, hydraulic requirements, lifting capacity, loader or telehandler brackets, passage width and the required mounting arrangement.

The Forager X10 can mount on three-point linkage Category 2 or 3, a telehandler or loader, or an adapter frame that allows more than one mounting arrangement. Blaney literature specifies tractors of 75 hp and above for the X10. Confirm the final machine and vehicle specification with Blaney Agri or an authorised dealer before ordering.

We match the machine, mounting arrangement and options to the vehicle already on your farm.

5. What represents the best long-term value

The lowest purchase price is not always the best long-term value, but not every farm needs the most advanced machine. Choose the X10 when you need premium strength, maximum feedout control and dependable handling of difficult bales. Choose the X6 when bale conditions are favourable and you want robust, proven self-loading performance at a more accessible price.

Buy the capability you need but make sure it is built strongly enough to last.

Forager X10 difficult bales made easy

Blaney Agri Forager X10

The Forager X10 is Blaney Agri’s flagship bale unroller engineered for the bales that expose the weaknesses in lighter machines.

Wet, heavy, tightly packed, saggy or misshapen bales require more than a rotating bed. They require the strength to turn the bale, the enclosure to hold it and the control to feed it evenly as it becomes smaller and less stable.

That is what makes the X10 different. Its chain, motor, frame, crossbars, high enclosure, triple-peak spikes and loading system work together as one complete bale-control system.

Built to keep going when the bale gets heavy

A wet, tightly packed bale puts serious strain on an unroller. That is why the X10 uses an over 50,000 N chain running on hardened rollers, supported by a heavy-duty frame and reinforced crossbars.

Keeps awkward bales where they belong

As a wet or misshapen bale gets smaller, it becomes softer and less stable. The X10’s high enclosure and innovative triple-peak spikes help keep it engaged and inside the machine instead of allowing it to fall out in one heap.

Extra support for the worst-shaped bales

Optional side rollers provide additional retention for soft, saggy or badly shaped bales, helping maintain control right through to the last of the feed.

The power to turn difficult bales

The X10’s powerful high-torque hydraulic motor keeps heavy and tightly packed bales moving, delivering faster and more dependable feeding when conditions are far from ideal.

Put the feed where you want it

Change direction hydraulically and feed to the left or right. Whether you are working in a field, yard or passageway, the X10 lets you place the forage where the stock can reach it.

Load without repeatedly leaving the cab

The cradle locks automatically during loading, saving another trip out of the tractor. Optional hydraulic locking pins provide fully hydraulic release.

Heavy-duty tines that do more than one job

Extra-thick, replaceable 50 mm sprung tines make loading straightforward and can also be used as a bale spike.

Designed for real livestock yards

Cattle do not always keep a sensible distance at feeding time. Unique safety guards help shield livestock from the moving slats and teeth, while covers provide additional protection around the drive system.

Heavy-duty without being oversized

The X10 combines serious strength with a compact design, making it suitable for tighter yards and passageways where a large trailed feeder would be impractical.

Built to withstand farm conditions

Painted and galvanised finishes are available, with Blaney’s multi-stage preparation helping provide lasting protection in demanding conditions.

More working days from one machine

The X10 can unroll silage, haylage and hay, as well as rolling out straw for bedding or re-baling into small square bales.

“The X10 is not heavy-duty for the sake of a specification sheet. Every part has a job to do turn the bale, hold it in the machine and give the farmer control over where and how much feed comes out.”

Sean Blaney, Founder Blaney Agri

Forager X10 optional equipment

  • Hydraulic locking pins for hydraulic cradle release
  • Wet Bale Kit for consistently heavy and wet bales
  • Side rollers for additional retention of soft or misshapen bales
  • Vehicle-specific loader or telehandler brackets
  • Adapter frame for use on a handler and three-point linkage

One X10 three ways to feed

Forager X10 the all round workhorse

The standard three-point-linkage X10 is designed to lift, load, carry and feed in fields, yards and passageways. It is the right choice for farms that want premium tractor-mounted control for general daily feeding.

Forager X10L the loader specialist

The X10L is a special version of the X10 for telehandlers and tractor loaders, fabricated with the brackets required for the vehicle. It can be fitted with a front adapter frame for use on a telehandler and three-point linkage.

The loader-mounted configuration allows the operator to lift down and load stacked bales using the self-contained tines, feed over barriers, fill raised troughs and unroll bales into diet feeders or tub and mixer wagons. Unrolling into a mixer wagon can reduce processing time and free up the tractor that would otherwise be tied to a separate loading and mixing process.

“Before I got the Forager X10L I had to wait at least two and a half hours a day on my diet feeder mixing, tying up my tractor and using a lot of fuel. Now with the Forager X10L I get all the feeding done in just over half an hour.”

Donald Menzies, Glenfarg, Perthshire

“This machine is the best thing since sliced bread! I used to spend an hour and a half feeding. Now with my Forager X10L it takes 10 to 15 minutes. With the machine mounted on the loader, I can fill into troughs and over barriers. I also use it for unrolling straw for bedding.”

Eric Knaggs, Durham

Forager X10W feed further with an offset wing

The X10W is designed to unroll silage, straw or hay into a trough, over a barrier or beyond another obstacle. Its extension wing adjusts hydraulically from the cab through almost 90 degrees, from approximately a 45-degree angle to horizontal, allowing accurate placement for different housing and feeding layouts.

Two versions are available: the X10 W-60 with a 60 cm offset wing and the X10 W-100 with a 100 cm offset wing.

Bale Feeder X6 proven performance and outstanding value

Bale Feeder X6
Bale Feeder X6

Bale Feeder X6: everything many farms need and nothing they do not.

Not every farmer needs the advanced difficult-bale capability of the X10. But every farmer should still expect proper strength, reliable feeding and a machine built to last.

When bales are normally firm, consistent and well shaped, the X6 provides genuine Blaney engineering in a compact, straightforward and competitively priced machine.

It is not a cut-price unroller. It is a purpose-built Blaney for farms that do not need to pay for X10 capability.

Proper strength in a value-focused machine

The X6 uses a 50,000 N chain with hardened rollers for strength and smooth operation, along with galvanised bars and a robust frame.

Feed at the pace and amount you choose

The X6 uses a high-torque motor and hydraulic feedout control, allowing the operator to regulate the amount of silage distributed and feed to either side as required.

Made for tighter yards and passageways

The X6 is designed to work in restricted yards and narrow passages. Current Blaney product information lists machine width from 1.85 m and use in passageways from approximately 2.49 m, subject to the exact machine specification and operating clearance.

Load quickly without another machine

A self-contained bale lifter, low cradle, guide points and uneven-length tines make the loading sequence straightforward. The low cradle also helps with access when removing the bale wrap and netting.

Set it up around your farm

Side bars or rollers can provide additional bale support, while loader and handler mounting brackets allow the machine to be matched to existing equipment. The X6L loader model allows stacked bales to be lifted and loaded using the integrated tines.

For heavy and misshapen bales, Blaney recommends stepping up to the Forager X10, which has been designed specifically for challenging conditions through its heavy-duty frame, reinforced crossbars and advanced bale-retention system.

EXPLORE THE FORAGER X10

EXPLORE THE BALE FEEDER X6

The quick decision

Choose the Forager X10 when bale condition, retention and maximum control drive the decision. Choose the Bale Feeder X6 when bales are favourable and dependable value matters most. If you are unsure, tell Blaney about your bales, current feeding method, vehicle and farm layout and the team will help specify the right machine.

When grass runs short, are you ready

A Blaney bale unroller is not only a winter machine.

When grass growth slows, grazing gets tight or livestock need additional forage, you can take a bale directly to the field and feed it quickly with very little manual work.

Put out only what the stock need, divide one bale between different groups or paddocks and keep what is left for the next feed. Once housing begins, the same machine continues working in the yard or passageway.

It gives you a practical backup when conditions change and means your Blaney earns its keep for more of the year.

Protect the value in every bale

Once feeding begins, as much forage as possible should reach the livestock rather than being lost through poor placement, sudden discharge or trampling. Controlled feedout helps place material in a consistent swath, distribute one bale between different groups or paddocks and stop feeding when enough has been supplied.

It also gives the operator the opportunity to identify and remove unsuitable material during feedout rather than placing the complete bale in front of livestock. Better bale control is not simply about a tidier feeding area. It is about making better use of a valuable farm resource.

Proven on farms in the UK, Ireland and worldwide

“I farm part-time and when I get home the last thing I want to do is spend time feeding silage. I can honestly say that feeding silage has never been so easy. No matter what shape of bale, wet or dry, the Forager X10 never fails. The whole job now only takes minutes. Thanks, Blaney, and feck the fork!”

Oliver O’Grady, Co Westmeath

“That machine has saved me so much effort. I had it for two weeks when I broke my arm and I was still able to feed my cattle. Last year I had a knee replaced and it is saving me again. I often say I should have bought one years ago.”

Dermot Bennett, Co Longford

“I have off-farm employment during the day, so I find my bale forager very handy for feeding my stock in the evenings. No more back ache! I find that my stock is much happier eating fresh silage every day.”

PJ Moffitt, Abbeyleix, Co Laois

“The side rollers are great to stop misshapen bales tumbling out of the bed, and the guards are brilliant if cattle come too close. This machine has helped us save a third on our feed costs by feeding one bale in different paddocks, meaning less wastage.”

Nick and Anne-Marie Bass, Australia

“With the way this machine feeds out, I can go down the passageway and lift out any mould, so I have fewer problems with cattle health.”

Daniel Buckley, Enniskeane, Cork

“I told the team about my set-up and they understood straight away the specification that would suit me best. I have used the Forager X10 for four years and can’t fault it or the support I have received.”

Cormac McEldowney, Co Antrim

Why settle for an unroller when you can own a Blaney?

Plenty of machines will turn a good bale on a good day. The real test comes when the bale is wet, the yard is tight and the machine is working every day.

For more than 30 years, Blaney Agri has designed and manufactured agricultural machinery around the realities of farm work. Farmer feedback has helped shape the strength, retention systems, self-loading designs, controls and model choices within our bale-feeding range.

We do not offer one generic machine at two different prices. The X10 is engineered for demanding work and difficult bales. The X6 is engineered to deliver dependable Blaney performance and outstanding value with firm, well-shaped bales.

When you buy a genuine Blaney, you are buying:

  • Over 30 years of agricultural engineering experience

A Blaney is not simply built to unroll a bale. It is built to make one of the farm’s everyday jobs faster, easier and more controlled.

Built by Blaney. Proven by farmers. Backed for the work ahead.

Don’t need to unroll the bale? Meet the Blaney Bale Blade

Not every farm needs to unroll a bale. If splitting and placing the bale better suits your feeding system, Blaney has another purpose-built answer.

Some farms need to split a bale rather than unroll it. The Blaney Bale Blade uses a unique hardened serrated blade to cut through round-bale silage more quickly than a straight blade.

It can distribute silage along passageways, feed over barriers or into ring feeders, and split bales directly into mixer wagons to reduce processing time. Loader and telescopic configurations can split a wrapped bale while retaining the wrap, helping keep the job quick and straightforward.

The Bale Blade is available for Category 2 or 3 three-point linkage, loaders, telescopic handlers and skid steers, with adapter-frame options. Blade lengths of 2050 mm and 2200 mm are listed in Blaney literature.

“The Blaney Bale Blade allows me to split bales and spread the silage along the passageway without leaving the tractor. This saves me a massive amount of time. I normally feed out over 25 bales at a time, so it is a great help that the machine retains the wrap, making the whole job quicker and easier.”

James Mulholland, Co Antrim

Frequently asked questions about bale unrollers

Can a bale unroller handle wet or misshapen bales

Yes, but the machine must be designed for those conditions. The Forager X10 is Blaney’s recommended option for wet, heavy, saggy or misshapen bales because of its high enclosure, triple-peak spikes, heavy-duty construction and optional side rollers.

Which Blaney bale unroller is best for regular bales

For firm, consistently shaped bales in favourable conditions, the Bale Feeder X6 provides proven performance, self-loading operation and outstanding value.

Can I feed on either side of the tractor

Yes. Both machines use hydraulic feedout control and can distribute to either side, subject to the machine and vehicle configuration.
